JULIE HUGHES

SOLICITOR B LEG STUD, GRAD DIP LAW

Julie has thirteen years experience working as a lawyer in the private sector, in the community and in government. She is also an accomplished legal academic.  At Catherine Henry Partners, Julie works both in the health and relationship law practices.

Prior to joining Catherine Henry Partners, Julie worked at a Newcastle firm where she practised predominantly in the family and relationship law field. She also had the conduct of matters in property and commercial law, wills and estates, employment and discrimination.

Julie has always had a special interest in health law particularly medical negligence, mental health and guardianship law and is committed to continuing to be part of the  firm’s dynamic health law practice. Prior to embarking on her legal career, Julie worked in a number of community based health facilities. She has held a position recently on the Faculty of Health Human Research Ethics Committee and has lectured to mental health professionals on legal and ethical issues in mental health care. In 2008 she was appointed a Legal Member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal.   

Julie has a significant academic background having taught a broad range of legal subjects at tertiary level both to law and nursing students. She has lectured and tutored in twelve subjects offered at the University of Newcastle including Bioethics and Law, Child Law, several Nursing units, Property and Conveyancing and Contracts. In 2006, she was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Learning Support. She is currently undertaking a Masters of Law degree at the University of Sydney.
