Midwife Indemnity: Is the day of the independent midwife over?

All registered health professionals must carry private indemnity insurance. Yet a recent review of maternity services has led to a decision by the Federal Government not to include home birth in its midwifery indemnity scheme. Independent midwives may still care for women and assist in home births but will be required to disclose their lack of indemnity to their patients.
